The Red Sea and Eritrea: A Brief Overview

The Red Sea, also known as the Eritrean Sea, is a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean, located between Africa and Asia. It has a surface area of about 438,000 km2, a length of 2250 km, and a maximum depth of 2211 m. The Red Sea is underlain by the Red Sea Rift, which is part of the Great Rift Valley. It is known for its extensive shallow shelves, marine life, and coral reefs, and is the world's northernmost tropical sea. Eritrea, officially the State of Eritrea, is a country in East Africa with a total area of approximately 117,600 km2. It is bordered by Sudan, Ethiopia, and Djibouti, and it has an extensive coastline along the Red Sea. The name Eritrea is based on the Greek name for the Red Sea (Erythra Thalassa). The nation is multi-ethnic, with nine recognized ethnic groups in a population of around six million
